I have heard a lot of people say these words
‘Everyone is going to die. It is the end to the journey called life. But the end does not matter, it is the journey that matters’
Now, I find this whole statement every weird.
We all take journeys. We take journeys to our offices, our homes and we take journeys to places we want to visit for vacations or whatever.
Everyday we go to our offices for work. Why? Because we want to earn money for whatever reason. It could be because we want to run our family or we want to buy good things or we just want food. Reason could be anything but the point is that we all go to work. Does it matter how we go to work? For some it might for some it might not.
I can take a cab to office or can drive myself or take a subway train or take any means. We surely do not change routes just because we want to have scenic views on the way to office. We just take the fastest route to save time. We do not care about the journey to office, all we care is that we reach their in the shortest amount of time.
We do the same when we travel back home. We want to reach our homes in the shortest amount of time. We may do things to enjoy our journey a little – like listening to music, watching a movie on the way home (if you are not driving that is) or whatever but we do not changes routes just to make it a lot better. We just want the journey which takes the shortest amount of time.
Lets talk our leisurely travel. Lets say I want to travel to Goa from Bombay. The train on this route gives me lot better views than the planes. But planes save me time. So which one I would take, I don’t know. It again depends on various factors most importantly how much time I have on my hand. But the main aim is to reach Goa regardless of my journey.
Now, if we call life a journey, then Death must be your destination. Why are we not worried about reaching that destination sooner? Why do we want to save time during that journey to death? We are we worried about the journey more than the destination? And who are we going to tell about this journey? Why does this journey matter?
No matter how you lived your life, doesn’t matter after you have died. People will talk about your life for a while and then forget about it. You might have enjoyed drinking every kind of alcohol, eating different kinds of dishes, travelling the world, playing adventure sports, visiting Himalayas or whatever. It doesn’t matter to anyone else. It only matters to you.
People used to drink, so did you. People loved chicken, so did you. You love cricket, others don’t, they are assholes. You were influenced by others’ lives and so you want to influence others. That is what you want. And that is why the journey is important to you. You crave for approval. You want others to feel that you really lived your life.
You post pictures of your life on facebook/twitter not because you want to share with them but because you want them to LIKE them or RT them.
If someone tells you that if you take a detour for your office/home which is 15 minutes longer but gives you a beautiful view, would you take it? No, you won’t. But you can take an eight hour train instead of a 2 hour plane from Bombay to Goa because it gives you a beautiful view. That is our journey to DEATH.
