United – if it didn’t make you cry, you don’t love Manchester United

Anything related to Manchester United is bound to create an interest in me and if it is something related to the crash of Munich, you bet I am interested. United is a television series on that crash which was aired by BBC.

United is the story of 1957/58 Manchester United team and focuses primarily on Sir Bobby Charlton and assistant coach Jimmy Murphy. Sir Bobby is trying to breakthrough into the United team which is full of players of the highest caliber. He constantly keeps asking Jimmy about his chances to play in the first team. When he is finally given a chance, he is delighted.

When the Football League tells Sir Matt Busby that League fixtures will not be shifted just because United have to play away in Yugoslavia, Sir Matt was forced to rush the team back in time for the league fixture. The plane had to stop at Munich and could never take off from their. Sir Bobby, who was one of the survivors is unable to recover from that incident and decides to quit football.

If you consider United as a movie, it falls way short of it. But if you consider United as a diary of events happening around that crash, it succeeds amazingly at it. There is no football shown and neither is the crash. But there is enough shown that a true Manchester United fan would have tears in his/her eyes. The performances are power packed. David Tennant revels in his role as Jimmy Murphy.

Overall, it gives a huge insight into the history of that major event that changed Manchester United forever, specially for a fan like me who was not even born when the event took place. How many of events displayed here are true, I am not sure. For ex: I could not understand that the board was deciding to close the club after the crash only for Jimmy to convince them otherwise.

I would rate it 4/5 and a must watch for every United fan.

One comment to United – if it didn’t make you cry, you don’t love Manchester United

Well it is a touching story. And I watched it and it was awesome. But people dont like the way Sir Busby was portrayed. He looked like a mafia don rather than a football manager which is how he used to be according to reports. The moment when Murphy looks at his team in the Wembley entrance and visualizes his old team is truly awesome!

And yes, its a must watch for Untied fans. It was touching even for me who is a CFC fan.
