ICICI Bank Ad – so close to reality yet so far

Recently, while stumbling channels on my TV set I came across the ads about ICICI Bank. And when I saw them, I had to say WTF!!! How can they air this? No no, nothing offensive about the ads, they are pretty much decent. Its just they are so far from reality.

There is this one ad that shows an old lady (ICICI Customer) who is waiting to perform a task and this ICICI Bank representative goes over to her and tries to help her out. Now, while helping her out, both of them end up chatting and chatting for so long that they continue even after office hours.

The ad looks awesome and personifies that how customer friendly ICICI Bank is. But only in the ad. When you enter an ICICI Bank branch, you would generally encounter loads of people since the bank does have a huge customer base. Nothing wrong with that again. But whats wrong is the break up of the x number of counters in the branch

  • half would be empty as there is no customer representative sitting over there (This is common across many branches regardless of the time of the day, day of the week or load during the day). I always wonder why they have counters if they do not have people to sit behind them.
  • 1 counter would be for senior citizens (I totally agree with this as there should always be one counter available for senior citizens)
  • 1 would be for customer queries (again in agreement as customer queries require immediate attention)
  • 1 would be for Personal Banker to whom not everybody has access. Since this representative is for people who meet certain criteria.
  • That leaves only 1 counter for general public who comes in for day to day operations and many a times its coupled with customer queries counter.

When you’ll ask some representative why other counters are closed – the reply would be ‘Sir, even we want to have lunch too’ in a very rude tone.

Now, first of all you are a Private Bank and your USP (supposedly) is customer service. If we want bank representatives to talk to us rudely, we do have Public Sector Banks like Syndicate Bank (where they will literally shout at you).

Secondly, customers never say that you do not have lunch. But 1/2 of the counters empty? Why open your bank from 8-8 if you cannot support it. If the bank cannot handle load at lunch time, they should probably close the branch for 1 hour at lunch time. Their employees can have lunch at leisure and people will not come to the bank at that time. If the bank is open at a particular time and customers are inside, you have to serve them. Whats the fuss about it then?

Now compare this to HDFC Bank (another private bank) and government banks – they always have manned counters. I have never seen counters at HDFC empty and they are very well managed. There are never huge queues and the processing is at a pretty good speed. And I have never encountered an HDFC representative talking in a rude tone..

And government banks – they too always have manned counters. Their counters are empty only when someone is on a leave. And then you are stuck coz there won’t be a back up. For eg: I was at Syndicate Bank and wanted an ATM card issued to me. Problem, the guy who issues it was on a week long leave and so I would have to wait for 1 entire week before the process can even start. God knows when it would have ended so I decided against it. And they definitely are rude while talking. They talk as if they own the bank.

Lets talk about websites now. Government banks – never tried. HDFC Bank – very sound and pretty fast. Barely encountered a bug ever. ICICI Bank – too damn slow and very buggy.

Call Center Numbers: Government banks – again never tried. HDFC Bank – again pretty fast and you usually get your solution pretty quickly. ICICI Bank – You would be really lucky to reach a person. And then you will get an answer as ‘Sir, the back office is not yet updated with the details’ or it would take forever for them to fetch the details and you’ll end up losing your patience and banging the phone.

I do not even want to go to each bank’s policies since they are very much driven by RBI norms and usually all private banks have similar ones with slight variations in monetary values.

Whom do you want to bank with? – take your pick.

Hello, Banking is a pain specially when it comes to icicibank.

Would like to put forward the real incident about icicibank which i came across:- Recently somebody called from icicbank & said that my account is linked to Mumbai branch and they suggest to transfer to my native place in xxx(india). So i confirmed for the transfer of my account to my xxx(india). After 2 days, i received a courier from icicibank. After opening the courier, i saw that it is a cheque book which i didnt request at all. Immediately i checked my account & noticed that icicbank has charged me the cheque book charges. i was really surprised.

At first stage i didnt request for the cheque book and secondly without my confrimation icicbank has charged my account.

This shows how good at service icicibank is.

Initally when i opened my account with icicibank, the bank officials had misplaced my documents and over that they blocked my account without my knowledge. After a continous followup, it took 6 months to rectify this problem.

Icicbank makes mistakes and put customer in trouble. This is called “customer service” served by icicibank.

To conclude, icicibank is not a suitable bank to banking with when compared to SBI and other nationalised bank in Indian market.

Wasn’t too impressed with the service of ICICI and HDFC as well …..changed to SBI and i’ve been pretty comfortable with it.

Absolutely agree with you that there’s a hell lot of difference between ads and ground realities.

    • Munish Gupta says:

never tried SBI so can’t say.. but ICICI have pissed me off many a times but I still use their services… just avoid going to the branch as much as possible.. but Axis has recently taken over being the worst one in my list after Syndicate that is…

  4. Dear Munish,

Thank you for your feedback, we sure appreciate it. ICICI Bank has always made constant efforts to provide the best of the services to its customers. Our customers’ genuine opinion is the best way to start, is what we think. Also going through the comments and the discussion on your blog, we could not help noticing that we are not considered a completely hopeless case as you would have us believe from your post :-)
But nevertheless, we do value your suggestions and we are sorry to know about your unfortunately not so good experiences on each of your visits to our branch.

Please share your contact details and we will take time to explain you how our systems work and how they simplify transaction without reducing the human element of our organization. Should you have any banking queries, we would be glad to help. Email us at care@icicibank.com

    Regards,
    ICICI Customer Service Team.

    • Munish Gupta says:

no u r not a hopeless case as this post came up just coz u guys asked for feedback. Also my post does not portray you as a completely hopeless case either. It portrays public sector banks as completely hopeless case. Moreover why would I have my money with you if you were a completely hopeless case.
Also, u r reading it wrong. I never mentioned that all of my visits to a branch have had a bad experience (u r starting to assume things here). I have also mentioned in one of my comments that my experience in Pune branch has been much better compared to Gurgaon and Ghaziabad branches.
And I was also not complaining about the processes n policies. What I was complaining about is the customer service (something which u r supposed to be good at).

I use net-banking more than any other form of banking and my experience with ICICI is far better than HDFC.

ICICI has more security in site, HDFC doesn’t even has a transaction password.
Me: Transaction Password is a bank specific feature and such features were not the subject of my current post.

ICICI guys reply to my queries of netbanking promptly but HDFC guys don’t care to reply to email as well.
Me: Not always the case with me

you can change your ICICI account details over web but HDFC requires you to visit a branch for changing even a minute detail like email.
Me: again a bank specific feature

If your money is stuck in some of the internet transaction like ticket booking ICICI gets that back to you in 4 working days and HDFC takes a whooping 45 days!!!
Me: again a bank specific feature

I’ve been to bangalore branch of ICICI only once in 2 years and they talked better than HDFC guys….
Me: I have never visited bangalore branch. My experience has been limited to Ghaziabad, Gurgaon branches and they were what I have written. Comparatively in Pune branch within the Infosys campus, things are a lot better. And I do have like at least 1-2 visits to a branch every month

i believe each of the bank’s branches differ in the way they treat customers. I am using the services of both ICICI and HDFC bank. For me, I never encountered a bug with ICICI netbanking. Of course, the ad and actual do not tell the right story. But that is the case with almost every product in the market.

    • Munish Gupta says:

yea.. the ad n actual product differ in most of the cases.. but for me ICICI website has always been disappointing. Too damn slow to perform any operation most of the times.

  7. S.R.Ayyangar says:

There is a saying in Hindi-”Door Ke Dhol Suhane” meaning distant drum sounds good! I too had a bad experience with the bank that too for fixed deposit!

    • Munish Gupta says:

we customers tend to remain quiet and these organizations do not take action. We need to raise our voice so that these orgs can hear us and take action. Some of them ignore the voice that we raise but at least we can enlighten others like us to take decisions based on feedback.

In ICICI’s case the good thing is that the moment I raised my voice on twitter they asked for my feedback which prompted me to write this post. Lets hope they take some action based on this.

I had a similar experience with Open Magazine but it took almost 4 months for them to take any sort of action and that too after following up with them repeatedly. Lets hope ICICI bank doesn’t go Open Magazine.
