Save the tiger – our national animal

Some time back there was a contest by Google named ‘Doodle 4 Google  – My India’ contest. I wrote a post about it which can be found here. But why am I talking about that contest now? Its been long over. Give some thought to the image below:

This image was created by Dhananjay B who is in 3rd standard and is from Coimbatore. This image shows the national symbols of India – Lotus, Mango, Peacock, Tiger, Banyan and Hockey. Tiger, as the national animal of India, symbolizes India’s wildlife wealth but what wealth are we talking about here? There are only 1411 tigers left as per National Tiger Conservation Authority census report released on Feb 12, 2008. This number is only 3.5% of what was the number of tigers a century ago (approx 40,000).

  • Number of tiger deaths (poaching) reported in 2008 – 29
  • Number of tiger deaths (poaching and mortality) reported in 2009 – 85
  • Number of tiger deaths (poaching and mortality) reported in 2010 – 6

Anyone with a simple mathematics calculation can see the number has come down by close to 10% since this report came out. At this rate I am pretty sure our children or grand children would only be speculating through fossils and old archive of images as to how tigers used to look since there would be barely any tigers left alive.

I am 28 and my son is 2 years old. Will any of us ever see a real tiger with our naked eyes? I am not very sure about that considering the current situation.

What can we do to save the tiger? Well, we can’t keep the tiger as our pet but we definitely can spread the word and discourage the trade of tiger skin and bones. So spread the word as much as you can and help save the tiger.

Just 1411 tigers left. This is very life-threatning for both tigers and humans.Population must be strictly controlled.Cutting of forests must be stopped.Forests are meant for thw wildlife and not human beings.Strict laws must be enacted to stop poaching.Only we citizens can save our tigers and ultimately the whole mankind.Plzzzzzzzzzzzzz help.

  2. I’m surprised at your unique way of responding to your readers’ comments, Gupta… ;) )))

  3. Quite a stirring start to the good post, dear Munish! I liked it. Don’t be so disappointed as I hope if the authorities do act even now right away, the gorgeous species of the National Animal can be saved from extinction from the country.

India’s got to staunch the evil Chinese activities rigorously, besides taking the Tiger reserve safety measures on a war-footing.

I’ve seen your post at Indivine too and have voted for it also. Keep blogging and sharing. Cheers! :)
